Chihuahua Behavior Explained: Why Your Chihuahua Barks, Shakes and Follows You
Chihuahuas may be tiny, but they often have very expressive personalities. One moment they may be following their owner around the house, and the next they may bark at a sound that nobody else seems to notice.
Many Chihuahua behaviors are completely normal forms of communication. Understanding why your dog behaves in a particular way can help you respond calmly and appropriately.
Here are some common Chihuahua behaviors and what they may mean.
Why Does My Chihuahua Bark So Much?
Barking is one of the most common behaviors associated with Chihuahuas.
Dogs bark for many different reasons. A Chihuahua may bark because it notices a stranger, hears an unfamiliar sound, wants attention, feels excited, or is uncomfortable in a situation.
Some Chihuahuas are naturally very alert and quickly react to sounds around them.
How Can You Reduce Unnecessary Barking?
First, try to understand what triggers the barking.
If your Chihuahua barks whenever someone approaches the door, you can gradually teach an alternative behavior, such as going to a specific spot and remaining calm.
Reward calm behavior instead of shouting at your dog.
If barking suddenly becomes much more frequent than usual, consider discussing the change with your veterinarian.
Why Does My Chihuahua Shake?
Shaking can occur for several reasons.
A Chihuahua may shake because it is cold, excited, nervous, or stressed. Small dogs can also be more sensitive to temperature changes.
If your Chihuahua is shaking occasionally and there is an obvious reason, such as being cold or excited, it may not be concerning.
However, persistent or unexplained shaking—especially when accompanied by weakness, pain, unusual behavior, difficulty walking, vomiting, or other concerning signs—should be discussed with a veterinarian.
Why Does My Chihuahua Follow Me Everywhere?
Many Chihuahuas become strongly attached to their owners.
If your Chihuahua follows you from room to room, it may simply enjoy being near you. Dogs are social animals, and staying close to a trusted person can make them feel secure.
Following you does not automatically mean something is wrong.
However, if your dog becomes extremely distressed whenever you leave, talk with a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional for guidance.
Why Does My Chihuahua Bark at Strangers?
Some Chihuahuas are cautious around unfamiliar people.
Your dog may bark because it feels uncertain or wants to create distance from someone it does not know.
Instead of forcing your dog to interact, give it enough space to remain comfortable.
Reward calm behavior when a stranger is nearby.
With gradual positive experiences, some dogs become more comfortable around new people.
Why Does My Chihuahua Tremble When Excited?
Excitement can sometimes cause small dogs to tremble.
For example, your Chihuahua might shake when it sees its favorite toy, gets ready for a walk, or expects food.
If the behavior happens only during exciting situations and your dog otherwise appears comfortable, it may simply be an expression of excitement.
Still, unusual or persistent trembling deserves attention, particularly if other symptoms appear.
